Alex Knew He Wanted Something Unforgettable
Alex reached out to me on WhatsApp about two weeks before his trip. He was visiting Baja from California and wanted to propose to Paulina somewhere with an ocean view — somewhere that didn’t feel like every other beach proposal he’d seen on Instagram.
He wasn’t sure exactly where. He just knew it had to be special.
That’s how most proposals start — a guy with the best intentions, a ring hidden in his suitcase, and a feeling that the moment needs to match the person he’s asking.
After a video call together, we had a plan. We decided on a hiking experience guided by a local who shared the history, flora, and fauna of the area along the way — making it not just a proposal, but an entire experience Paulina would never forget.
On a quiet afternoon at Playa Balandra — with turquoise water, golden volcanic rocks, distant boats drifting across the bay, and not a resort umbrella in sight — Paulina jumped into Alex’s arms and said yes.
This is the story of how it happened, and everything you need to know if you’re planning something similar in Baja — whether you’re flying into Los Cabos or already have your heart set on something beyond the typical Cabo engagement photographer experience.

The Hidden Gem Near Los Cabos You Need to Know
Los Cabos is the obvious choice when you’re flying into Baja from California, Canada, or anywhere in the US. It’s easy to get to, there are great hotels, and yes — it’s beautiful.
But here’s what most couples don’t know: La Paz, just 2 hours north of Los Cabos, is arguably more stunning. And Playa Balandra is one of the most photographed beaches in all of Mexico for a reason.
Think dramatic volcanic mountains meeting white sand, cacti framing the coastline, and water so clear and calm it looks almost unreal. Unlike the beaches in Cabo, Balandra has no jet skis, no vendors, no crowds — especially on a weekday.
For a proposal? It’s absolutely unmatched.

How the Planning Actually Works — A Real Conversation
When Alex first messaged me, I asked him the same questions I ask every guy who reaches out:
Where are you staying? Sometimes the resort itself has a beautiful beach and that’s the most practical option. No transportation, no logistics — just you, her, and the view.
What is she like? This is the most important question. Is she adventurous — the kind of woman who would rather hike to a hidden beach in leggings and sneakers than sit at a fancy dinner? Or is she more romantic, flowers-and-candlelight kind of person?
Because a proposal doesn’t have to be just getting down on one knee. It can be an entire experience she’ll never forget.
For an adventurous woman, think: a sunrise hike to a secret viewpoint, a boat tour to a private island, a kayak through a mangrove forest. She won’t care if her outfit isn’t perfect — she’ll care that you took her somewhere extraordinary.
For a romantic woman, think: a private dinner at a restaurant with the best view in town, a table decorated with flowers, a violinist playing her favorite song — and then, the ring.
That’s exactly why I always do a video call first. In 30 minutes together, we figure out the perfect plan based on who she is, where you’re staying, how far you’re willing to travel, and what will make her say “this is so us.”

11 Tips to Pull Off the Perfect Surprise Proposal Without Her Suspecting a Thing
1. Don’t suggest she get her nails done. If she’s the type, she’ll do it without being asked. If she’s not, suddenly mentioning it will raise a red flag immediately. If her nails are really bothering you close to the date, have one of her friends casually suggest it — not you.
2. Don’t suddenly care about matching outfits. If color coordination has never been your thing, don’t make it your thing now. Instead, quietly check what colors she’s packing and choose your outfit to complement hers — on the day of the proposal, wait until she’s dressed before you pick what to wear.
3. Hide the ring well in your luggage. Women always run out of space in their suitcase. She will open yours at the last minute and ask to borrow room. Hide the ring inside something — a sock, a toiletry bag, somewhere unexpected. And keep that bag as your carry-on. Never check it.
4. Propose on day two of the trip, not the last day. If you wait until the last day, she may notice you’ve been acting nervous all week. Propose early in the trip — she won’t have had time to pick up on any signals, and you’ll both get to spend the rest of the vacation celebrating.
5. Tell the hotel not to announce your photographer. If your photographer is meeting you at the resort, call the front desk in advance and ask them not to call your room to say “your photographer has arrived.” That one sentence can ruin everything.
6. Watch your pockets. If you’re wearing fitted pants, the ring box will show. Choose relaxed-fit pants or shorts with a deeper pocket, or carry the ring in a small bag.
7. Don’t make the day feel too perfectly planned. If every minute of the day runs on a tight schedule, she’ll notice. Leave room for spontaneity. Let things breathe.
8. Work with what she already wants to do. Women plan. She probably already has ideas for the trip. The best proposals feel organic — like it happened because you were doing something you both love, not because you engineered a perfect moment. Suggest the activity because “a friend recommended it” or “you saw it on Instagram” — not out of nowhere.
9. Keep communication with vendors over the phone. WhatsApp threads and text messages can be accidentally seen. Call your photographer, the restaurant, or the resort directly when coordinating details. Fewer messages = fewer chances she’ll accidentally see something.
10. Think about the light — not just the location. At the moment you propose, try to position her so the sun is behind her, not in her eyes. This protects her eyes and also means her skin won’t look washed out in the photos. Your photographer can’t direct you in that moment — so it helps to think about this in advance.
11. One knee, not two. Getting down on both knees means you’re apologizing. One knee means you’re proposing. You’ve got this.

About Balandra: What You Need to Know Before You Go
Balandra is a protected natural area, which means a few things you should plan for:
Entry fee: There is a fee to enter the reserve, and the number of daily visitors is limited. This actually works in your favor — it keeps crowds small.
Permits: Because it’s a protected area, certain activities require coordination in advance. I handle all of this for my clients — permits, entry logistics, and timing — so you don’t have to figure it out on your own from abroad.
Best time to visit: Baja California Sur is beautiful year-round, but to avoid hurricane season the ideal window is mid-November through May. This is also when the light is most spectacular for photos.
Weekdays are always better. Tuesday through Thursday, Balandra is significantly quieter than weekends. If your travel dates are flexible, plan the proposal for a weekday.

What It Looks Like When It All Comes Together
On a quiet afternoon at Balandra, Paulina had no idea what was coming. She’d spent the time taking in the landscape, the turquoise bay, the distant boats drifting quietly across the water.
And then she jumped into his arms.
That’s what a proposal in Baja can look like — no crowds, no noise, just the two of them and that view.
