San Miguel de Allende is not a beach destination — and that is exactly the point.

If you are the kind of couple who would rather wander through cobblestone streets lined with bougainvillea than fight for space on a crowded resort beach, San Miguel was made for you. This is a city of art galleries, rooftop restaurants, boutique hotels with fountain courtyards, and a light that painters have been chasing for decades. It is romantic in a way that feels earned, not manufactured.

As a San Miguel de Allende wedding photographer with connections throughout the region, I can tell you that this city attracts a very specific kind of couple — and if you are reading this, you might be one of them.

San Miguel de Allende has several airport options depending on where you are flying from:

Querétaro International Airport (QRO) — approximately 1.5 hours by car. This is the closest option and my first recommendation when checking flights.

Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) — approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Worth checking if you find better connections from your city.

Mexico City Airports — approximately 4-5 hours by car.  If you are flying through Mexico City, I recommend checking Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) first, and Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) as a second option.


My transportation recommendation: The easiest option is to book a private transfer directly from the airport to your hotel — stress-free and worth every peso on your wedding day. I can help you arrange this.

If you prefer the bus, you can take one that departs directly from the airport, so there’s no need to go into the city or change terminals. Check schedules in advance with Primera Plus or ETN. Depending on which airport you arrive at, you may need to take a bus to Querétaro city first and then grab an Uber or taxi to San Miguel de Allende. Make sure to check the last departure time so you don’t get stranded.
During high season, I recommend buying your tickets online in advance. During low season, you can purchase them directly at the airport when you arrive.

November through May is the sweet spot for San Miguel de Allende. Unlike the humid coastal destinations, San Miguel sits at high altitude (6,300 ft / 1,920m average). which means the climate is genuinely comfortable — cool mornings, warm afternoons, and crisp evenings perfect for a rooftop ceremony.

That said, climate patterns have shifted in recent years and nothing is fully guaranteed. My general advice: if you want the most reliable weather, aim for February through April.

The rainy season runs June through October — not impossible, but you will want a solid backup plan for your ceremony.

Where to Stay

This really depends on your personality and what you enjoy doing.

If you are a light sleeper or simply prefer quiet and privacy, consider staying slightly outside the centro. Cuna del Cielo is a beautiful property away from the main square — perfect for couples who want to start their morning with a coffee on the balcony, spend the afternoon at a golf club, and end the evening with a private chef cooking for just the two of you in your own space.

If you love walking, exploring, and being in the middle of everything — restaurants, galleries, markets, cobblestone streets — then staying close to the centro histórico is the way to go. Rosewood San Miguel de Allende is one of the most stunning properties in the city, with spectacular views of the Parroquia, beautiful gardens, and the kind of service that makes your elopement feel completely effortless.

San Miguel does not have beaches or cenotes — it has something different. Here are my top recommendations for intimate ceremonies:

Boutique hotel gardens — Many of San Miguel’s boutique hotels have interior courtyards and gardens that are absolutely magical for small ceremonies. Stone walls, bougainvillea, natural light filtering through. These spaces feel intimate and completely removed from the outside world.

Rooftop terraces in the centro — With views of the Parroquia and the city’s terracotta rooftops, a rooftop ceremony in San Miguel is unlike anything else in Mexico. The late afternoon light here is extraordinary.

The streets themselves — Some of my favorite portrait moments happen on San Miguel’s narrow cobblestone streets at golden hour, when the light bounces off the colonial facades and everything turns warm and cinematic.

Burros (donkeys) are a beloved part of Mexican culture and a playful, authentic touch that makes for incredibly memorable photos. Getting Around San Miguel

This is important — I won’t recommend renting a car in San Miguel de Allende if it’s your first time there.

The streets are narrow, often one-way, and parking is genuinely stressful even for locals. The best way to move around the city is on foot — which is one of the joys of staying near the centro — or by Uber for longer distances.

For your wedding day specifically, I recommend hiring a private driver or uber who can pick you up at your hotel and take you to your ceremony location. It removes all logistical stress and lets you be fully present from the moment you step outside.

Book your hotel early. San Miguel is one of the most visited cities in Mexico, especially during high season and holiday weekends. The boutique properties fill up fast.

Embrace the city. The best San Miguel elopements are the ones that actually use the city — a coffee before the ceremony, a walk through the Jardín, dinner at a rooftop restaurant after.

Is San Miguel de Allende good for a destination wedding? Absolutely. It is one of Mexico’s most romantic cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with incredible venues, world-class restaurants, and a magical atmosphere that couples from the US and Canada fall in love with immediately.

What language do vendors speak in San Miguel? San Miguel has a large international community and many vendors speak English. I am also bilingual and can help with any communication or coordination you need.

Is San Miguel de Allende safe for international couples? Yes — San Miguel is one of the safest cities in Mexico for tourists and has been home to a large expat community for decades.

How far is San Miguel from Mexico City? Approximately 3 hours by car or 5 hours by bus. If you are flying into Mexico City, it is absolutely doable to combine both cities in one trip.

Can I bring guests to my elopement in San Miguel? Of course. I work with couples ranging from just the two of them to small celebrations with up to 50 guests.
